Peugeot 308 breaks World Record

29th July 2009

Bells Crossgar is proud to announce that the Peugeot 308 SR HDi 110 has broken a world record for fuel economy, achieving 126.8 MPG - which has been authenticated by Guinness World Records.

The 308 SR HDi 110 was driven for 3,700 miles (175 hours worth of driving) by John and Helen Taylor, otherwise known as the fuel fugitives, around the UK using just 29.1 gallons (132 litres) of diesel! With a 60 litre fuel tank, the 308 needed just over two tanks of diesel costing approximately £136.24, an incredible 3.6p per mile. The record braking 308 HDi

The same couple also embarked on a similar quest last year, driving a 308 HDi around Australia, achieving an average of 90.75MPG over 9,620 miles.

The 308 range is available in three and five door hatchback, SW estate and CC (Coupé Cabriolet), with a wide choice of petrol and HDi diesel engines. Most models are equipped with Michelin Energy Saver tyres which contribute to the high fuel economy. The SR model is specifically tailored with the Fleet customer in mind, with Bluetooth handsfree and satellite navigation as standard.

Charlie Bell, Dealer Principal comments: "We would like to congratulate the fuel fugitives on this fantastic achievement, it just goes to show the fantastic economy Peugeot customers get with our low CO2 vehicles and the potential savings that can be achieved.

To celebrate, we are offering a free tank of fuel with the purchase of a 308 HDi before the end of August and on top of that anyone taking a test drive in a 308 will be entered into a national prize draw to win free fuel for a whole year!"

The Taylors

The Taylor's tips for fuel efficient driving:

  • Drive in a non-aggressive manner – avoid accelerating or braking too hard and use a smooth steering action.
  • Use higher gears.
  • Don’t carry any unnecessary weight in the boot or rear seats.
  • Take care of your engine with regular services and oil changes.
  • Avoid high speeds – driving at just 5mph under the speed limit can cut fuel consumption by up to 23%.
  • Check the air filter – a clogged filter can reduce your fuel efficiency.
  • Check tyre pressures as under-inflated tyres can also lead to you using more fuel.
  • Use your handbrake for hill starts.
